NEW Haircut + OOTD

29 Jul

I slipped this little bomb into the last post (did you notice?) but I thought I should probably do a proper post finally. “I got a haircut” feels like an understatement, but there you go. It had reached my belly button, the longest it has ever been in my life… to the shortest it has ever been in my life! I like to live in extremes, clearly.

To sum up this weekend: Friday night storm, Saturday afternoon markets, chasing the light for outfit photos as the sun set (see above), a chips and salsa overdose, Sunday morning run by the lake, followed by an eye-opening mezcal tasting, a quick photo shoot at my abode, and with my last bit of energy I managed to upload these photos.

It’s been a long week and I’m fresh out of words for you, but if you guys have any questions about the cut leave ’em in the comments and I’ll respond to them all when I’m feeling more chipper!

WHAT I WORE:: THINGS I LIKE

17 May

Truck-lined streets. This is Texas
HAT MADEWELL / SHIRT ANTHROPOLOGIE / PANTS ZARA / BAG ZARA / BOOTS VINTAGE

I have an affinity for this baseball cap that I simply can’t explain. The day I bought it I put it on when I walked out of the store and have worn it at every excuse ever since. Why? I couldn’t tell you, it’s completely nondescript, it’s an unremarkable color, it probably doesn’t even go with this outfit. But I like it. And at the end of the day, that’s what it’s really all about, right?

Other things I like:
  • These totally beat up boots I bought at a street stall on South Congress here in Austin for such a low price, I bought two! (Remember that week I bought 3 pairs of boots? This was one of em)

  • The back of this shirt. Can’t get enough of it.This is white button down shirt number 3 in my closet.

  • This lip stain. It’s a Revlon lip stain in Lovesick… I don’t know what I did before it. I have 4 colors from this line and Lovesick is my favorite.
  • In writing these bullet points, I’ve also discovered that I really love multiples. That is potentially dangerous for my wallet.
What are a few things that you like right now?

What I Wore:: Trying Color

7 May

I’m not sure if it comes across in the outfits I choose to post here, but I don’t wear much in the way of color in real life. This post pretty much sums me up: grey, chambray, army green, and a fun shoe. Yup, add in some black and a boot addiction and I’d say that’s me 7 days of the week. Oh and another thing, I don’t wear many prints. So this shirt is a bit of a departure for me. I haven’t found many ways of wearing prints and colors that don’t feel in a way cheap to me, but the second I saw this tee (on sale at J.Crew) with its bold handkerchief print, I knew it would fit right into my wardrobe.

These days I try to only buy things that give me the feeling that it is so me, I can’t believe I don’t already own it. Do you know that feeling?

WHAT I WORE:: FLASHBACK

11 Apr

On this particularly lovely day I met up with friends for omelettes and tea at a new brunch spot I had never been to before (I told you it was lovely). After brunch we wandered back behind the restaurant parking lot to take a couple of outfit shots. Then fueled by caffeine I drove home and while passing by one of my favorite vintage shops I pulled a spontaneous left turn and decided to do some spur of the moment vintaging. I mean seriously, could this day have gotten any better? Well just then, it did.
Flashback is a store in a cute little blue house in Austin, and the dress forms on the sidewalk wearing 50’s prom dresses and 60’s sundresses always entice me to come in. This wasn’t the first time I’ve made an impromptu stop there. I think there must be something in this polkadot dress of mine, because last time I came to this shop with this dress on I had great vintage luck, and this day was no different. I brought 4 or 5 dresses with me into the fitting room, and there was one red dress I had trouble parting with. But then I found the boots. Hunter green cowboy boots in excellent condition, but just a little too tight. I asked the shopkeeper about them and she called them the “Cinderella boots.” Apparently women have been trying to make them fit to no avail for ages. And when I heard that I knew I had to have them. Yea, they’re a bit snug, but the Cinderella boots are all mine. It was well worth the effort, because I wear them all the time. So far they’ve come to a crawfish boil, out to a bar, and even to work. I have never, ever thought of myself as a cowboy boots kind of girl but I’ve apparently caught some sort of Texan fever because since then I’ve bought two more pairs of vintage cowboy boots. Pics of those to come.

What I Wore:: Austin Graffiti Park

26 Mar
Hey loves! So it’s 12:30 (at night) and I was already in bed. But then I decided to get up and eat some chips and hummus… oh and write a quick blog post. One hour and half a tub of hummus later, I bring you this outfit post! This was taken at the end of a perfect Austin day, just as the sun was setting (golden hourrr) in this random graffiti park on a neighborhood street. We took these photos to the tune of spray cans shaking and the scent of fresh paint in the air.
Austin weather is vacillating between the 80’s (last Monday) and the 30’s (this Monday) and it’s throwing my wardrobe for a loop. So on this day I wore layers layers layers. I really liked the combo of a jeweled t-shirt with an unbuttoned chambray (my favorite!), and a parka on top for warmth. I also threw on a metallic skirt that some might consider evening attire, but to me it makes more sense with a t-shirt and sneakers. Oh the sneakers! A Target find, can you believe it?

WHAT I WORE:: EVERDAY LOOK

25 Feb
This camel leather jacket is so buttery & soft, you’d never guess it was American Eagle!
Good friends take outfit photos for their blogger friends

Sometimes, street style on blogs tend towards the outlandish. Sometimes I wear things in my outfit posts that I wouldn’t necessarily wear on your typical afternoon in Austin. But this outfit is totally me, it’s exactly what I wear, day in and day out. The leather collar of this jacket has a worn in patina, these shoes are a couple years old and very well-loved (I recently switched out the laces to these red ones!) these jeans? I wear them… ALL the time. And I live in a number of variations of this white t-shirt. It’s not the most exciting outfit you ever saw, but it’s what I wear on a daily basis.

Do you take outfit photos? Are they your day-to-day outfits, or do you step it up for the photos?
I’m not alone in this am I?
And a special thanks to my friends Chris and Nikki who came along to take these pictures for me! Everyone check out Nikki’s blog ChanelWears, she rocks a lot of color and her hair is amazing.

WHAT I WORE:: HAPPY HOUR

17 Oct

I wore this simple look to happy hour at Contigo with the Camille Styles team recently. I have a bit of an addiction to relaxed collared shirts – white, blue, striped, denim, they’re so easy to wear and never look sloppy. Paired with some cargo skinnies and my new leopard heels, and you’ve got just the right amount of effort to output ratio. Effort to output ratio? Let me explain…
I’m always searching for the balance between effortless and trying too hard – it can be a tricky one to master especially when street stylers are constantly pushing boundaries in an effort to be photographed. Do I step out the door every day looking like Anna Dello Russo? No. I’m guessing neither do you. That would qualify as trying too hard. So when a leopard print fringed dress isn’t going to work with your schedule, try some leopard heels instead. These are from ShoeMint and not only do they satisfy my leopard craving, but there’s a sneaky peek of zebra on the heel strap as well!

STREET STYLED:: COLOR BLOCKING

25 Jul

I fell HARD for Jil Sander’s long bright skirts and crisp white shirts and the subsequent editorials that followed (example 1 / example 2). However the peplum wasn’t exactly wearable and the stiff fabric was a bit formal for my day-to-day – not to mention the price tag. So I was thrilled to see this lovely rendition! A look we could all work into our real life wardrobes. A look I love for its simplicity, and yet the candy colors clash so brilliantly don’t you think?

Check out Street Styled No. 1 if you dig this post. xoxo

SUMMER SERIES:: 3 STRAP FLATS

19 Jul

Friends, I gave you standing outfit photos. I gave you sitting outfit photos. And now, so as not to bore you (I am wearing the same shorts in all of them after all) I give you jumping outfit photos! I’m starting to think all outfit photos should be jumping, it shows the clothes in a new light, no? Also, it calls to mind jumping genius Natsumi with her levitation photos. Genius.

Now, on to the topic of shoes. (My favorite topic everrrrrrrrrr!). I tend to think of these as the quintessential man repellant shoe. I mean, there’s nothing sexy about shoes that a 5 year old might wear.  (Same goes for these sunglasses). However, when my boyfriend set eyes on these he said “those are fun” … and I said “really??? I thought you would HATE these”. And he said well, they’re fun. I would have liked him to elaborate and discuss, but he had nothing else to say on the matter. Fair enough.

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while you may recognize these shoes, I did a post about Alexa Chung’s 3 strap flats aaages ago, and about how I really really wanted them. Actually it’s quite impressive that I deliberated for a whole year before making this purchase, and I’m so glad I did!

SUMMER SERIES:: JEAN SHORTS

9 Jul

I recently put together the ‘Lookbook‘ page on the blog and realized that I have only posted TWELVE outfits since my first outfit post a year ago. What a failure! A travesty! An average of only one outfit a month. That’s a rubbish effort if you ask me. So in an effort to boost the number of outfits I share I decided to start a new series featuring the ultimate summer staple: the denim short. Classic. Effortless. Indispensable. Jean shorts have been around since the dawn of time it seems, or at least since I first saw the movie Now and Then with Christina Ricci in her cool tomboy plaid shirt, and Thora Birch with her jello bra – and decided I wanted to be them. Since then I’ve been through a plethora of shorts, from the itsy bitsy to the teensy weensy (hello high school), and now I think I’ve finally found a pair that’s juuust right. Naturally I’ve been living in them – I think the secret is I sized UP two sizes, for that Alexander Wang slouch. I wore it here with my Taylor Tomasi-inspired blazer, also worn here.
