LET’S DISCUSS:: Blogging vs. Living

26 Jun

Check out all those flower crowns!

Hi friends. This is a topic I’ve been rolling over in my mind for quite some time, settling on one side of this battle before flipping it over and trying out the other. If you read the title then you know I’m referring to blogging vs. living, or in a broader sense documenting the moment or living it. If you know me in real life then I’ve probably had this conversation with you at least once, coaxed an opinion out of you and shared mine with you.

The thing is, for me personally, I have a faulty memory. I find it very difficult to remember childhood details, and at this point high school is a blur to me, even college is beginning to fade. It always helps when you have someone else’s mind to corroborate your memories with, together you can piece the  puzzle of what it was like to be a 6th grader together. But the best memory aide has always been photos, and even more accurate (and less forgiving) videos.

So this places me quite squarely on the documenting side of the argument, but I can see the value of experiencing moments without a camera (or now, an iPhone) in your hand. When viewing the world through a small digital viewfinder, there are jokes, nuances, and stories that are sure to be missed.

I’ve pretty much come to terms with the fact that my photos will be my memories in a few years’ time, but recording and photographing moments has never been my problem. It is taking the time to comb through the 200 photos I took on a given day, and choosing the best 10. Or editing 5 days worth of vacation video into a digestible 2-minute clip. Then comes re-sizing, uploading, and publishing them to the appropriate online platform (blog, Facebook, my blog’s Facebook, and don’t even get me started with Instagram).

Maybe you’ve noticed, maybe you haven’t, but I have been posting with less frequency on Fuji Files (though you can still find me regularly on CamilleStyles and  coco+kelley). You could say I’ve been trying out a little more living in exchange for less blogging. As with all things I think we can all agree that balance is ideal. But balance takes work, for such an unassuming, two-syllable word it takes considerably more work than I think anyone gives it credit for. But that is for another day. For now, I just wanted to let you know that I’m working on it. See photos above.

This was Eeyore’s Birthday Party, “it was named for Eeyore, a chronically depressed donkey in A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh stories who, in one story, believes his friends have forgotten his birthday only to discover they have planned a surprise party for him.“Sound weird? Well it is, I probably should have mentioned that I live in Austin, and the birthday party is an annual tradition in Austin’s hippie sub-culture. Think drum circles, costumes, glitter and birthday cake.

As a demonstration of everything I have just written, I thought it would be appropriate to share these photos of me, living, taking pictures, and not editing the photos until 3 months later.

I’d also love to know if any of you deal with blogging vs. living, and if you have any advice for a fellow blogger.

xoxo Cristina

WHAT WE WORE:: NEON PT. 2

3 Dec
This is what happens when you take outfit photos at night. When you procrastinate all day long and then when you finally get out there the sun has already gone down. Luckily our highlighter clothing lights up the night sky and you can easily find us! We were practically glowing.
This is look number two in our How to Wear Neon series! I was feeling a 90’s moment with my docs and sweater tied around my waist. Sweatshirts tied around the waist were my thing back in 7th grade. But with this neon sweater hopefully the look is a little more Jenna Lyons and a little less junior high. Nancy’s wearing her crop top with a fringe maxi skirt and spiked Litas. I’d be lying if I said I don’t try those on all the time. They’re killer. Literally, they’re so dangerous.
ON ME:
SWEATER J.CREW / DRESS FOREVER21 / BAG CALVIN KLEIN / EARRINGS JEWELMINT / SHOES DR MARTEN
ON NANCY:
TOP TOBI / SKIRT TOBI / SHOES JEFFREY CAMPBELL / NECKLACE URBAN OUTFITTERS

DIY DIP DYE: Koolaid Hair Tutorial

20 Nov

This weekend was action packed. In addition to the race, we dip dyed Nancy’s hair in Koolaid! Slightly impromptu, totally effective. This was an excellent way to spend an evening. Nancy’s hair was already ombre’d so her tips were lighter than the rest of her hair to begin with. If you have blonde hair you can skip this step, but if you have dark hair you’ll probably have to bleach the ends first. First we boiled a small pot of water, then added 5 packs of Koolaid. We were going for a pink rather than red result, so we used 4 packs of Pink Lemonade and 1 packet of Watermelon Cherry. Nancy’s hair is quite long, so if your hair is shorter you could use less Koolaid. Stir the mixture until the Koolaid has dissolved, then transfer it into a large heat safe bowl.

Next, Nancy put on an old t-shirt (in case of stains) and then dipped the ends of her hair into the bowl. She left it in for about 30 minutes, but you could probably leave it for less. We passed the time by gossiping and drinking hot cocoa. When you’re all done, simply blow dry. Voila! Hot pink hair. You should know this is a semi-permanent dye, it will eventually fade but it definitely won’t wash out for a few weeks. Lemme know if you have any questions!

Nancy and I are both feeling excited about our new neon pieces – mine is a sweater from J.Crew (cashmere! majorly discounted!) and Nancy’s is a crop top turtleneck from Tobi. We’re going to be showing you a few different ways that we wear neon over the next couple of weeks, and this is Look 1. I’ll be totally up front with you, this first look was 100% inspired by this outfit. It may or may not be the whole reason I bought the sweater.

ACL 2012 – What We Wore

22 Oct

via JTPics.com

Happy Monday y’all! Here are a few of my snaps from Days 2 and 3 of Austin City Limits 2012! Somehow, inexplicably, this was my first time to attend ACL Music Fest. To be honest, something about music festivals has always put me off. The thought of lining up for an hour to use a portapotty, or (in some cases) an inability to bathe, or (in many cases) getting wet and muddy. I’m not a girly girl, but I’ve always been intimidated by committing to these seemingly medieval conditions. Well friends, I went into my first ACL hopeful, and I came out the other side with muddy boots and a big smile on my face. Oh yea, and a flower crown on my head!
For the grande finale on Day 3 Nancy and I decided to wear my diy flower crowns, and not to toot my own horn but.. these babies were popular! I initially made my first flower crown for a little photo shoot with CamilleStyles thinking it would be a one-time use sorta thing, but ever since then my friends have been borrowing them, instagramming them, and generally going gaga for them. It has awakened the entrepreneurial spirit in me. They’re the absolute perfect accessory for a festival, Halloween, or just because. I’ve also found they make great gifts 😉
So starting today if you’d like your very own Fuji Flowers crown
send me an email at

They’re $25 each, and if you have any color requests do let me know!

WHAT WE WORE PT. 2

18 Apr

I’m feeling the pastel-floral-neon-IT’S-SPRING-TIME frenzy just like everybody else, but on this particular day I was evidently in a head-to-toe black mood. We all get those sometimes, right? Some of us more often than not. Nancy on the other hand had the right idea, with a fantastic dress that reminds me of some amazing fish you’d see snorkeling in the Seychelles. Don’t you think? Also, how do we feel about cutouts? They look great on models, but personally I’m slightly terrified of bodycons with cutouts, so this loose flowy dress with a mesh not-quite-a-cut-out but more of a peekaboo is just right for me. I promise the next outfit photo will contain more color on my part, and maybe a little more Nancy too if we’re lucky!

ON ME:
DRESS / STYLESTALKER ARID DRESS
EARRINGS / FROM IMPECCABLE PIG IN AUSTIN
SHOES / JEFFREY CAMPBELL 99 WEDGES
PURSE / ZARA

ON NANCY:
HAT / URBAN OUTFITTERS
DRESS / SYLK
NECKLACE / FOREVER21
SHOES / TARGET
BAG / VINTAGE STAND ON SOUTH CONGRESS

WHAT WE WORE:: SXSW + ST. PADDY’S DAY

19 Mar

sxsw armband = hottest accessory around
This was Nancy’s first time taking outfit photos. She’s a natural, isn’t she?

ON ME: HAT URBAN OUTFITTERS / SHIRT J.CREW / JEANS ZARA / PURSE ZARA / SHOES STEVE MADDEN
ON NANCY: WATCH MICHAEL KORS / SHOES DSW / NECKLACE MACY’S / PURSE GSPOT THRIFT SHOP / THE REST VINTAGE & THRIFTED!

Hope you all had a smashing St-Paddy’s-Day-sxsw-weekend! Oh, and let’s go ahead and call green our Color of the Week shall we? This is my friend Nancy, she’s made a sneaky appearance here on FF before and it was so much fun that we decided to take some outfit photos this weekend! SXSW took Austin by storm the past 10 days and I can say with a touch of relief that it is now over and life can go back to normal. Maybe next year I’ll be better prepared for the onslaught that is sxsw, but I found it all to be a tad overwhelming! Were any of you in town for sxsw?

What did you wear for St. Paddy’s Day?
